MURRAY-MALONEY, MARY GEMMA

PARENT OF ALUM

MURRAY-MALONEY, MARY GEMMA, 75, of Cincinnati, Ohio passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday September 13, 2016. She was born to Sunny Jim and Alice Murray on January 8, 1941 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mary earned her undergraduate while a member of the Convent of Glenmary Sisters. Mary graduated from Xavier with a Master's in Education in 1974. She obtained her Montessori Certificate that same year and began serving the children of Cincinnati for the next 25+ years. She taught everything from creative arts to Ecology and was also a Girl Scout troop leader. Mary developed the Children's Mountain Top Program in Northside, which focused on giving inner city children an opportunity to experience nature and learn about conservation. Mary married David Egan in July of 2001. Together, they traveled, camped, enjoyed nature, particularly the Ginkgo trees at Spring Grove Cemetery. Mary was an avid gardener and won a bronze medal for her ground breaking "Butterfly Garden" in the Ault Park Flower Show. She was an active member of American Montessori Society, Arbor Day Society, IMAGO, served on the advisory board at the Catholic Worker. She is survived by her husband of 15 years, David Egan, children Alanna Mavourneen Maloney (Gideon Smith), Eamon Richard Green Maloney ’92 (Kelly Fuson), Michael Raymond Maloney, four grandchildren; Marek, Maeve, Alyssa, and Katelyn, and first husband Michael Eamon Maloney. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, James and Joseph Murray. Visitation will be held at the Norman Chapel at Spring Grove Cemetery on Saturday September 24th, 2016 from 11:30 am until the service begins at 1:30 pm. Burial will be at Spring Grove Cemetery with a wake to follow. Memorial donations in Mary's memory can be to the Nature Conservancy.
